Far from your home Internet access? Here are 5 tips to reduce your mobile data usage

Limit Background data

Do you know that some applications update automatically without require anything? This is the case, for example, of your mailbox and several social networks such as Instagram and Facebook. To deactivate it, open your device’s settings and select the applications for which you want to disable background data. Doing so will only update these applications when you are connected to a Wi-Fi network.

iPhone: Settings > General > Background App Refresh

Android: Settings > Data usage > Background data

Manage Location Services

Google’s Location services can also increase your data consumption, because it gives your position and information to apps using a small but constant data stream. Notice that each time you download an app, a message pops up and asks if you allow the app to access your location even if you are not using the app.To minimize its impact on your data usage, you can limit the number of applications for which you authorize this service. You can also completely disable the location mode in your device’s settings and reactivate it just when you need it.

iPhone: Settings > Privacy >  Location Services

Android: Settings > Privacy and Security  > Location

Browse by activating Chrome’s Data Saver

You can use Chrome’s Data Saver to limit your data consumption. By enabling this extension, the pages you see in Google Chrome are compressed before being downloaded, reducing the amount of data Chrome uses. However, it should be known that private browsing or secure pages, which are those that start with https: //, are not included. Also, note that Data Saver mode is not available for iPhones and iPads.

Android:  Open Chrome app > Settings > Data Saver

Use a browser like Opera Mini

Opera Mini is a mobile browser which, like the Chrome Saver, compresses data to speed up loading and save data. The application (Android, IOS) offers interesting features that improve Internet browsing such as optimizing download speed and performance as well as the possibility to choose the browser layout.

 Disable your Mobile Data

As a last resort, you can completely turn off your device’s mobile data. This way you will be sure that you will not use any mobile data outside of a Wi-Fi connection. If you don’t want to be as limited, you can also choose individually which one you allow to use mobile data.

iPhone: Settings > Cellular

Android: Settings > Data usage

By using one or more of these tips, you can easily reduce your mobile data usage and stop worrying when you are away from your Internet access or a Wi-Fi connection.
