Netflix alternatives in Quebec: Which services to choose?

Netflix is the most popular streaming service in Canada. More than one third of Canadians are Netflix subscribers.The number of subscribers has grown steadily over the years, thanks in part to original productions such as House of Cards, Stranger Things and Orange is the new black and recently with TV shows such as Bridgeton, Lupin and Squid Game. 

However, Netflix has increased its rates for all of its plans in recent years For example, the premium plan has gone from $13.99 to $16.99 per month and from $16.99 to $18.99 per month in 2020. Streaming services

Disney+

Disney+ is available for $11.99 per month or $119.99 per year. The platform has the following four subsidiaries:  Pixar Animation Studios, Marvel Studios, Lucasfilm and National Geographic. Some original productions are already available since its release, including Star Wars: The Mandalorian, High School Musical: The Series, The Mighty Ducks: Game Changers, WandaVision, Loki, The Falcon And The Winter Soldier and Hawkeye. Apple TV+

Apple launched its own streaming service, Apple TV +, on November 1st. It offers a free 7-day trial and is available for $5.99 per month. Some productions such as original movies and series are already available on the platform, including The Morning Show, See, and For All Mankind

Amazon Prime Video

Prime Video, which is included with an Amazon Prime subscription, offers a wide range of films and series at a cost of $7.99 per month or for $79.00 per year. This platform offers several original contents, including series such as Carnival Row, Grand Tour  and The Marvelous Mrs Maisel.  

In addition, you have the option to subscribe to the following premium channels: StackTV, Acorn TV, Hayu, Nickelodeon, Hollywood Suite, Love Nature, MGM, OUTtv, Shudder, Super Channel, Starz, Smithsonian Channel and Sundance Now.

With this subscription, you also have access to several services at no extra cost. Among other things, you get free and fast delivery on several items with Amazon Prime and you also have the option to listen to over a million songs without commercials with Amazon Music. In addition, you can also download a wide selection of digital books for free and receive free content and games with Twitch Prime. 

YouTube Premium 

Although YouTube Premium is better known as a video-sharing platform,  this service is available for $11.99 per month and also offers films and series. Some of which are original productions such as Cobra Kai, Impulse, Mind field and Origin. This subscription also includes access to commercial-free songs and videos. 

Acorn TV 

For British TV shows fans, this service is for you. This platform offers content focused on drama, thrillers and comedy. Available for $7.49 per month, Acorn. TV also has original content such as Manhunt, London Kills and Blood

BritBox

BritBox is a subscription service created by the BBC. Offered at $8.99 per month or $89.99 per year with a 7-day free trial, their content consists mainly of popular British shows and movies such as Sherlock Holmes, Doctor Who and Downtown Abbey

Crave TV 

Crave TV is a Canadian video on demand service. It offers two packages: the first one is offered for $19.99 per month or $159.00 per year and gives access to many original and exclusive movies and series, as well as Super Écran and Showtime and HBO channels. This package gives access to four users at a time.

The second package is available for $9.99 per month or $99.99 per year and offers the same content as the first package, but only on mobile. This package gives access to one user at a time.

Crave also offers to add the STARZ platform for $5.99 per month. It offers original productions such as Outlander, The White Princess and Power.

Crunchyroll Premium

Crunchyroll Premium is an American distributor that owns a wide manga and anime titles. This platform simultaneously airs their content one hour after Japanese Broadcast with no ads. This service costs $7.99 per month and also offers a free 14-day trial. Crunchyroll also offers a package for $9.99 per month or for $99.99 per year with the possibility to watch the series offline. 

Shudder 

Shudder is a platform owned by AMC, an American TV channel. It is specially made for horror, suspense and thriller films.  This service is offered at $5.99 US per month or $56.99 US per year. It includes some original content such as Wolf Creek show and exclusive films and series. 

Club Illico 

Club illico is a Quebec streaming service offered starting at $10.00 per month. This platform has many French-language films and series, including original productions such as Les Honorables, Blue Moon, Victor Lessard and La dérape

Tou.TV Extra

Tou.Tv Extra is a service owned by ICI Radio-Canada that offers a wide variety of exclusive French-language films, series, Quebec and foreign short films. This service is offered at $6.99 per month and the first month is free.  Tou.TV Extra also offers a few original productions including Féminin/Féminin, La règle de (3) and Bébéatrice.

Mubi

Mubi is the streaming website for cinephiles. This service broadcasts foreign and independent films. Available for $11.99 per month or for $83.88 per year, with a free 7-day trial, the platform rotates 30 movies every month. There is also the option to rent movies at a cost between $5.49 and $8.49

Sundance Now

Available in Canada since 2015, Sundance Now aims to present independent films and series. Available for $59.99 US per year or $6.99 US per month, this platform also produces some original series including: A Discovery of Witches, Riviera and The Bureau

 

CBS All Access

CBS All Access is a streaming service owned by the American channel CBS. It is offered at $5.99 per month and includes several CBS shows such as Survivor, The Experts, Big Brother and some original productions such as The Good Fight, Tell Me A Story and Why Woman Kill.

CBC Gem

CBC Gem is a video streaming platform owned by CBC. This platform offers free content such as news, documentaries, movies and several on-demand programs such as Dragon’s Den, Schitt’s Creek and Anne with an E. The service also offers a premium commercial-free version for $4.99 per month and unlimited access to news at all times. CBC Gem offers a free 30-day trial. 

Hayu

Hayu is specially created for reality TV fans. This platform, which belongs to the NBCUniversal channel, offers more than 200 reality TV shows such as Keeping Up With The Kardashians and The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills and also several crime-inspired documentaries and documentaries about various celebrities. It costs $5.99 per month and offers a free 30-day subscription for new subscribers.

Discovery + 

Launched in October 2021, Discovery + is a streaming service that offers unlimited access to over 200 exclusive and original series, as well to several TV channels such as HGTV, Food Network, TLC and Animal Planet. This platform is offered at $4.99 per month or $6.99 per month with the ad-free option. 

À la carte

If you don’t want to pay for a monthly or annual subscription, some platforms are available to rent and/or buy movies or series on a pay-per-view basis. Here are a few possibilities:  

Apple TV and Google Play (Rent/buy)

Apple TV and Google Play also allow you to rent or buy a movie on demand. The rental price varies between $4.99 and $6.99 for a movie. The purchase price for the latest releases is usually around $24.99

Also, many TV channels offer free content on their websites, such as Noovo.ca and Tou.TV.
